WLSC Admissions Requirements
Students applying for the Dental Hygiene Program must first meet the general admissions policies established by West Liberty State College. For more information, contact the Admissions Office at 304-336-8076 or 800-732-6204.
Program Admissions Requirements
Students may apply for the two-year professional program terminating with an Associate in Science Degree in Dental Hygiene, or a four-year program ending with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene. Applications for admission to both the two-year and four-year programs must be completed and submitted to the Dental Hygiene Program before January 15 of the year the student wishes to enroll.
High School Applicants: 2 and 4 year Program
- Transcript of high school grades to date.
- Rank in upper 50% of graduating class.
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.80.
- Completion of one unit of high school biology and lab, one unit of high school chemistry and lab, and one unit of high school algebra with grade of "C" or better in each course.
- Minimum ACT score of 18 or SAT of 870.
- Completed application form for the Dental Hygiene Department.
College/Transfer Applicants: 2 and 4 year Program
- If not attending West Liberty State College, the proper transfer forms must be obtained from the Admissions Office.
- Completion of one unit of high school or college chemistry, one unit of high school or college algebra, and college biology (4 credits).
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.80.
- Minimum grade of "C" in each science course attempted.
- Transcript of college grades to date.
- Health forms completed by physician.
- Completed application form for the Department of Dental Hygiene.
** APPLICATIONS FOR ADMISSIONS TO BOTH THE TWO-YEAR AND FOUR-YEAR PROGRAMS MUST BE COMPLETED AND SUBMITTED BEFORE JANUARY 15 OF THE YEAR YOU ARE APPLYING.
Scholarships
- The Dr. E.J. Joseph Memorial Award is presented annually to a student completing the first year of the professional program.
- The Wheeling District Dental Society Scholarship is awarded annually to a first-year and a second-year student who reside in Marshall, Ohio, Brooke, or Hancock counties.
- The Catherine H. Dorer Scholarship is awarded annually to a first-year student who has shown a high degree of proficiency early in his/her training.
- The Dental Hygiene Program Scholarship is awarded annually to a first-year student entering the second semester of the program who demonstrates scholastic excellence.
- The American Dental Hygienists' Association Insititute for Oral Health administers scholarships to students at the associate and baccalaureate levels.
- The Pallottini Memorial Scholarship for Outstanding Professional Promise is awarded annually to a student completing the first year of the professional program who demonstrates a strong work ethic and professional promise.
Tuition and FeesTuition and fees are based on in-state and out-of-state residency. Additional expenses for students enrolled in the Associate of Science Degree Program include: uniforms, shoes, glasses with side shields, instruments, Dental Hygiene lab fee, x-ray badge, professional dues for student organizations, National Board and Clinical Board fees, and professional pin.

Background The Sarah Whitaker Glass School of Dental Hygiene was opened in September, 1938, and graduated its first class in 1940. The dental hygiene students have the opportunity to enroll for a two-year professional program ending with an Associate of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene or a four-year professional program ending with a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene.
Degree Completion ProgramThe Degree Completion Program provides the opportunity for dental hygienists who have a certificate or an Associate Degree from an accredited dental hygiene program to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene. The program offers the licensed and practicing dental hygienist the opportunity of advancing professional knowledge and skills, combined with an optimal general education. The main objective of the program is to enable the graduates to broaden their career options.
Students may enroll in a full- or part-time arrangement. Students attending on a part-time basis must complete the program within six years after initial entrance ot the College.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR DEGREE COMPLETION
- Applicants to the program are expected to fulfill the admission requirements listed in the catalog section titled Admissions and Adademic Policies.
- Applicant must be a graduate of an accredited associate degree or certificate dental hygiene program.
- A minimum overall grade point average of 2.5 is required.
- Official college transcripts of all college work completed to date must be submitted with an application to the Program Director of Dental Hygiene.
- A license to practice dental hygiene in a minimum of one state is required to enter this program.
- An admission interview is required for each applicant. Appointments can be made by contacting the Program Director at 304-336-8030 or 800-732-6204x8030.
- Applicant must have recommendation letter(s) from the employer(s) of his/her most recent dental hygiene position or the Director of the program where two-year dental hygiene degree was completed.
